Timeline

  1. 1873: Victoria Square (Adelaide) to Glenelg railway line opened by the Adelaide, Glenelg and Suburban Railway Company. Became known as the South Terrace line.
  2. 1879: Glenelg to Brighton railway line opened by the Glenelg & South Coast Tramway Co. Ltd.
  3. 1880, 24th May: Adelaide to Glenelg railway line opened by the Holdfast Bay Railway Company. The company line commenced at a junction with the beginning section of the Government South line, at Mile End. Company services had running rights over the Government line to Adelaide Station on North Terrace. Hence the line became known as the North Terrace line.
    Five stations at the opening: Hilton Road, Plympton, Cambden Junction, St. Leonards, and Victoria Place (Glenelg).
  4. 1881, Dec: Both Adelaide-Glenelg railway companies were combined, forming the Glenelg Railway Company, Limited.
  5. 1883, 14th March: The Adelaide to Aldgate railway line (beginning of the South line to Victoria) opened by the South Australian Government. This was an extension of the existing government built track between Adelaide and the junction with the Holdfast Bay Railway Company line at Mile End.
  6. 1899, Dec: The two Adelaide to Glenelg railway lines were bought by the Government from the Adelaide, Glenelg and Surburban Railway Company. For £120,000 in gold.
  7. 1913, 22nd Sept: Mile End Goods and Locomotive Depots opened. On land adjacent to the South line at Mile End, the western side, in the wedge of land between that line and the North Terrace line to Glenelg. Hence subsequent development of this land owes its history to the decision of the Holdfast Bay Railway Company to build its line from Mile End, in conjunction with the Government commencing to build the South line from Adelaide through Mile End and beyond.
  8. 1929: Both the South Terrace and North Terrace railway lines to Glenelg were closed. The South Terrace line was converted to tramway operation and remains in operation in 2025.
